Welcome Aboard

While scrolling through Keir Dullea's (Dave Bohman in 2001: a Space Odyssey) many roles one stood out to me more than the rest, and that was him playing the New Testament Elisha in the Hallmark Hall of Fame's 'Give Us Barabbas!'.

For those unfamiliar with Barabbas' role in the NT he was the other prisoner alongside Jesus whom the crowd before Pontius Pilate voted to release instead of Jesus of Nazareth. The odd thing is that his first name is also 'Jesus' which means 'the anointed one' while at the same time Barabbas translates as 'son of the father'. Now Elisha in the Old Testament was the successor to Elijah who receives Elijah's cloak when the prophet is taken up. Elijah was the only person in the OT to be 'taken up' as it were, other than Enoch. Where this gets curious is when it is recognized that Elisha is arguably the closest depiction to Jesus of Nazareth in the OT in terms of his miracle working and resurrection. The man who played Barabbas himself in this was James Daly who is known for the part of Honorious in Planet of the Apes (Incidentally, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Planet of the Apes were released within two months of each other and the correspondences between the two films go on for days).

Honorius is a orangutan elder and the deputy Minister of Justice. He is appointed to present the case for the prosecution of Taylor. He is essentially in the same position as Pontius Pilate. David Bowie plays Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ while 2001's David Bowman, once again, plays NT Elisha in Give Us Barabbas.

David Bowie is also well known for the classic song 'Space Oddity'. The BBC featured this song in its television coverage of theApollo 11 launch and lunar landing, which took place in the days following the release of the song.

In honor of the book and movie, NASA named a Mars orbiter: 2001 Mars Odyssey. This was not the first time NASA had a connotation with the film; the Apollo 13 command module's callsign was Odyssey during the ill-fated mission.

Charlton Heston = Moses; another OT figure the NT Jesus is likened to. Elisha, like Moses parts the red sea parts the Jordan after Elijah ascends.

Role reversal: Charlton Heston as Dr. Zaius (the Hierophant of the Outer Church) in the 2001 remake

In Planet of the Apes Honorius' main arguement is that Taylor's very existance is blasphemy, being that "God created ape in his own image". The name Honorius is surly taken to represent the Roman Emperor by the same name who was the Western Roman Emperor from 395 to 423... yet it is interesting to note that this name is also attributed to 'one of the oldest and most influential texts of Medieval magic' Liber Juratus Honoriior: The Sworne Booke of Honorius http://www.esotericarchives.com/juratus/juratus.htm
This is an occult work, filled with Kabbalistic wisdom, yet statements like the following one make me tilt my head:

"The Jews do in no wise work to obtain the vision of the Deity, for by the coming of Christ they lost their preeminence, nor can they come to heaven, for the Lord says, he that is not baptized shall be damned. And so in all angels they work imperfectly. Nor can they through their invocations bring any work to effect, except they believe in Christ. For it is said by the prophet, "when the king of kings and the Lord of Lords is come, then shall your annointing cease," which should never have ceased if they could have wrought effectually by this art. And so theire works are nought. And although the Jews in that they are Jews are condemned, of yet they do worship the High Creator, but not after a due sort. Yet through the power of the holy names of God, spirits are constrained to come. But Jews because they are not signed with the sign of God, that is to say with the sign of the cross, therefore those spirits will not answer them truly...

Therefore, the Christian man only works truely to come to the vision of the Deity, and in all other works. And although three sorts of men do work by this art magic, yet it is not to be thought that there is any evil in this name Magian, for this same name Magian signifies in the Greek tongue a philosopher, and in the Hebrew tongue a scribe, and in the Latin tongue it signifies wise. And so this name of art magic is compounded of this word magos which is as much to say as 'wise,' and of ycos which by interpretation is 'knowledge.' For by it a man is made wise. For by this art a man may know things present, past, and to come."

'...And in the End it's only round and round'

"In the popular mind, and in the minds of most scholars, the origin of Christianity is clear: The religion began as a movement of the lower-class followers of a radical Jewish teacher during the first century C.E. For a number of reasons, however, I did not share this certainty. There were many gods worshiped during Jesus' era that are now seen as fictitious, and no archeological evidence of his existence has ever been found. What contributed most to my skepticism was that at the exact time when the followers of Jesus were purportedly organizing themselves into a religion that urged its members to "turn the other check" and to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's," another Judean sect was waging a religious war against the Romans. This sect, the Sicarii, also believed in the coming of a Messiah, but not one who advocated peace. They sought a Messiah who would lead them militarily. It seemed implausible that two diametrically opposite forms of messianic Judaism would have emerged from Judea at the same time.

This is why the Dead Sea Scrolls were of such interest to me, and I began what turned into a decade-long study of them. Like so many others, I was hoping to learn something of Christianity's origins in the 2,000-year-old documents found at Qumran.

I also began studying the other two major works from this era, the New Testament and War of the Jews by Flavius Josephus, an adopted member of the imperial family: I hoped to determine how the Scrolls related to them. While reading these two works side by side, I noticed a connection between them. Certain events from the ministry of Jesus seem to closely parallel episodes from the military
campaign of the Roman emperor Titus Flavius as he attempted to gain control of the rebellious Jews in Judea. My efforts to understand this relationship led me to uncover the amazing secret that is the subject of this book: This imperial family, the Flavians, created Christianity, and, even more incredibly, they incorporated a skillful satire of the Jews in the Gospels and War of the Jews to inform posterity of this fact." -Joseph Atwill

'The book Caesar's Messiah shows that Jesus was the invention of the Roman Imperial Court. Their purpose: to offer a vision of a “peaceful Messiah” who would serve as an alternative to the revolutionary leaders who were rocking first-century Israel and threatening Rome. This discovery is based on the parallels found between the Gospels and the works of the historian Josephus, which occur
IN SEQUENCE

In Rome, Titus may be known for many things; but in Jerusalem, he will ever be known as the emperor who laid waste to the Second Temple and the Holy City. The Arch of Titus stands today among the ruins of ancient Rome for all to see: the relief on the arch depicts Jews being marched into slavery and exile. Captured with them are the treasures of the Holy Temple, which was razed to the ground. These ancient images tell the story of the Emperor Titus’ conquest and destruction of Jerusalem—a story of exile and loss of a homeland, with echoes that reverberate even to this day.

The oldest son of the Emperor Vespasian, Titus was the second to reign in the Flavian dynasty. But before he became emperor, Titus was an acclaimed war leader of Rome, who was charged by the reigning emperor with the task of ending the Jews’ rebellion against Roman rule. When Titus conquered and destroyed Jerusalem, he was putting an end to many decades of rebellion that had erupted long before his time.

The most important and most often written name of God in Judaism is the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God. “Tetragrammaton” derives from the Greek prefix tetra-(“four”) and gramma (“letter”, “grapheme”). The Tetragrammaton appears 6828 times. This name is first mentioned in the book of Genesis (2.4) and in English language bibles is traditionally translated as “The LORD”. 8 is considered the vertical infinity
The Hebrew Gematria of YHWH is made up of the Hebrew letters Yod (10), Heh (5), Vav (6) and Heh (5),
giving a total Hebrew Gematria of 26.
YHVH Is the Star of DVD, see this article:

In the Zohar it is indicated that the Kabbalistic Tree is ultimately meant to be folded into itself; the Supernal Triad into the seven lower Sepheroth with Kether joining Tiphareth (the Crown unifying with the Heart). While at the same time the Malkuth (the feminine) also joins with Tiphareth (the masculine). In Alchemy this is known as the 'chemical wedding'. This is represented in the Tetragrammaton as well. The result of such a shift is the production of the Star of David or Seal of Solomon:

The Zohar continues such an explanation with the theme of the quaternion marriage. God and Shekina were above and Samael and Lilith were below. But it is alleged that following the destruction of the temple Shekhina descended to follow in the footsteps of her flock (the Malkuth descends to the Tree's base and exists in a state of exile), and Lilith (Queen of the demons as it were), her handmaiden, ascended to Kether and governs the Tree in her own way. In Christian terms Lilith is the Harlot or Whore of Babylon, she is the substitute for the Shekina, or what they refer to as the 'Holy Spirit'.

This calls to mind the queen known as Jezebel in the Old Testament. Jezebel was a power behind the throne. After executing the prophets Ahab and Jezebel allowed temples of Baal to operate in Israel, and that religion received royal patronage. After Ahab's death, Ahaziah and Jehoram, his sons by Jezebel, acceded to the throne. The prophet Elisha had one of his servants anoint Jehu as king to overthrow the house of Ahab. Jehu killed Jehoram as he attempted to flee in his war chariot.

Jehu confronted Jezebel in Jezreel, where he incited her court officials to murder the queen by throwing her out of a window and leave her corpse to be eaten by dogs. Jezebel became associated with false prophets. In some interpretations, her dressing in finery and putting on makeup before her death led to the association of use of cosmetics with "painted women" or prostitutes.
Now, like most names of demons, angels, and the like, the name Lilith is not to be spoken by Kabbalists  and occultists, being that to pronounce a name is to call said intelligence forth. So, the name Lilith is substituted by the Hebrew letter Lamed and doubled as essentially: L.L.

This being said it is a point of interest then that Adrian Lyne should direct both LoLita and Jacob's Ladder, while in Jacob's ladder the main character Jacob Singer is living in a substitute reality; i.e. Hell realm where his wife and mother to his child has been replaced by a demon woman who is named Jezebel.

Diana's Mirror

The name Lilith is etymologically related to the Sumerian word lil (wind), though it has been associated with the Hebrew Laylah. Like the Sumerian wind demon and its later Babylonian counterpart, Lilith was regarded as a succubus, or female version of the incubus. In the popular imagination, Lilith eventually became confused with Lamashtu, the Babylonian child-slaying demon. The only biblical reference to Lilith is in Isaiah 34:14, in which she is depicted as a demon of the desert.

It has been pointed out by fellow synchronaut Elelith that one of the bombs in the book Dr. Strangelove was named LoLita. This is appropriate in this context being that the Zohar contains the following:

'Although when connected with the Sun, the Moon was equally bright, but when departing she lost her light and assigned charge of her hosts, and shells were created for the covering of the brain, and for the benefit of the brain (Zohar I 20a).

After the primordial light was withdrawn there was created a 'membrane for the marrow,' a k'lifah husk or shell, and this k'lifah expanded and produced who was Lilith (Zohar I 19b).'
The Shekina is the Malkuth, and as such she is associated with the pleasure principle and the tip of the sexual organ for men or woman, while the Yesod is associated with the genitals. Dr. Strangelove has been openly admitted by Kubrick to contain a sexual sub-text; specifically a sexual frustration that mounts between the Mother Russia and the ever so eager U.S.A. The nuclear winter at the end is actually representative of climax. Here, Shekina's substitute Lilith's identity as a 'Bomb Shell' couldn't be more fitting.
R. Ya'aqov and R. Yitzhaq:
Samael resembles the form of Adam, and Lilith the form of Eve. Both were born in an androgynous form, corresponding to the form of Adam and Eve: below and above, two twin forms. And Samael and Grandmother Eve [i.e., Lilith], who is the Northerner, are emanations from beneath the Throne of Glory. And the sin [of Adam] caused this evil. (Patai81:453)
Zohar 1:19b

After the primeval light was hidden, a husk was created for the brain, and that husk spread out and brought forth another husk which was LiLith. And when she emerged, she went up and went down towards the little faces, and wanted to attach herself to them and be shaped after them, and did not want to depart from them. But the Holy One, blessed be He, removed her from there and placed her down below. When He created Adam, in order to perfect this world, as soon as Lilith saw Eve affixed to the side of Adam, and saw in them the beauty of the Above, and saw their perfect image, she flew off from there and wanted, as before to attach herself to the little faces. But the guardians of the gates of Above did not Let her. The Holy One, blessed be He, rebuked her, and cast her into the depths of the sea, and she remained dwelling there until Adam and his wife sinned. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, brought her up from the depths of the sea and gave her power over all those children, the little faces of the sons of man, who are liable to punishment because of the sins of their fathers. And she went and roamed the world. She approached the gates of Paradise on earth, and saw the Cherubim guarding the gates of Paradise, and sat down facing the Flaming Sword, for she originated from that flame. When that flame revolved, she fled. And she roams in the world, and finds children liable to punishment, and caresses them, and kills them. And all this is because of the diminishing of the moon which reduced its light.... When Cain was born, she could not attach herself to him. But later she approached him and bore spirits and winged demons. For 130 years Adam had intercourse with female spirits, until Naamah came. Because of her beauty the sons of God went astray after her, 'Ussa and 'Azael, and she bore from them, and from her spread evil. spirits and demons in the world.... (Patai81:454f) And she goes and roams the world at night, and makes sport with men and causes them to emit seed. And wherever men are found sleeping alone in a house, they [these spirits] descend upon them and get hold of them and adhere to them and take desire from them and bear from them. And they also afflict them with disease, and the men do not know it. And all this is because of the diminishing of the moon. (Patai81:461)

To summarize the Zohar which establishes the Hebraic myth of Lilith,

in the beginning God created the Sun and Moon. They both ascended with equal dignity but the Moon did not feel right with the Sun, in fact, each mortified one another. The Moon asked where does thou pasture and the Sun asked the Moon where dose thou make thy flock rest at noon. Then the Sun asked how she as a little candle could so brightly shine in midday. God thus interceded to avoid strife between them and told the Moon to diminish itself. The Moon asked why she should be the one to veil herself, but God insisted, saying, 'Go your way forth in the footsteps of the flock' (Song of Songs 1:7). Although when connected with the Sun, the Moon was equally bright, but when departing she lost her light and assigned charge of her hosts, and shells were created for the covering of the brain, and for the benefit of the brain (Zohar I 20a).

After the primordial light was withdrawn there was created a 'membrane for the marrow,' a k'lifah husk or shell, and this k'lifah expanded and produced who was Lilith (Zohar I 19b).

He (God) summoned to issue from the side of Darkness a sort of a female Moon which rules the night, and is called night, and is associated with Adonai, Lord of the Earth (Zohar I 16b)…the Left, side of Darkness, flamed with its full power, producing at all points a kind of reflection, and from this fiery flame came a Moonlight essence…Just as it is the desire of Darkness to merge itself with Light, so it is the desire of night to merge itself with day (Zohar I 17a-b).
By causing a separation of the Sun and Moon God ended the discord between them. He caused
the Moon to diminish herself and go forth in the footsteps of the flock, at the head of the lower ranks. In the Zohar the Sun was rightfully the
higher dominion ruling the day, being male; and the Sun was rightfully the higher dominion ruling the night, being female. There are two kinds of luminaries: those ascending from above called 'luminaries of light' and those descending from below called 'luminaries of fire' (Zohar I 20b).
Although both luminaries continued reigning, the Moon felt slighted, her attachment for the Sun was severed and her self-diminishment was not of her choosing but commanded by God. This diminishment caused a k'lifah (or husk of evil) the birth of Lilith. Lilith has a body of a beautiful woman from the head to the navel, but from the navel down she is a flame of fire. This represents Lilith's energy, according to Zoharic myths, from the resentment caused by the diminishment of the Moon as well as the dark and fiery side of night.

These details are just the beginning of the Zohar's description of the shadowy personality known as Lilith that if often met in the night by a sleeping person. An analogy is drawn between Lilith and the husks of evil or the dark feminine side of the Self that appears to men and women at night in dreams. Such meetings are necessary for 'the permanence of the world.' They strengthen the male ego, some say replenish his sexual drive.

The Vatican Obelisk was first brought from Egypt to Rome by Caligula. It was the centerpiece of a large racetrack he built.

          Milonia  Caesonia

When several kings came to Rome to pay their respects to him and argued about their nobility of descent, he cried out "Let there be one Lord, one King". In AD 40, Caligula began implementing very controversial policies that introduced religion into his political role. Caligula began appearing in public dressed as various gods and demigods such as Hercules, Mercury, Venus and Apollo. Reportedly, he began referring to himself as a god when meeting with politicians and he was referred to as Jupiter on occasion in public documents.

A sacred precinct was set apart for his worship at Miletus in the province of Asia and two temples were erected for worship of him in Rome. The Temple of Castor and Pollux on the Forum was linked directly to the Imperial residence on the Palatine and dedicated to Caligula. He would appear here on occasion and present himself as a god to the public. Caligula had the heads removed from various statues of gods and replaced with his own in various temples. It is said that he wished to be worshipped as Neos Helios, the New Sun. Indeed, he was represented as a sun god on Egyptian coins

Nero was Caligula's brother; all too well known for setting fire to Rome

The Millennium Falcon

'Horus was the ancient Egyptian sky god who was usually depicted as a falcon, most likely a lanner or peregrine falcon. His right eye was associated with the sun Ra. The eye symbol represents the marking around the eye of the falcon, including the "teardrop" marking sometimes found below the eye. The mirror image, or left eye, sometimes represented the moon and the god Djehuti (Thoth).

In one myth, when Set and Horus were fighting for the throne after Osiris's death, Set gouged out Horus' left eye. The eye was restored by either Hathor or Thoth. When Horus' eye recovered, he offered it to his father, Osiris, in hopes of restoring his life. Hence, the eye of Horus was often used to symbolise sacrifice, healing, restoration, and protection.
There are seven different hieroglyphs used to represent the eye, most commonly "ir.t" in Egyptian, which also has the meaning "to make or do" or "one who does." In Egyptian myth the eye was not the passive organ of sight but more an agent of action, protection or wrath...

In the Ancient Egyptian measurement system, the Eye Of Horus defined Old Kingdom number one (1) = 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + 1/32 + 1/64, by throwing away 1/64 for any rational number. Eye of Horus numbers created six-term rounded-off numbers. The Old Kingdom definition has dropped a seventh term, a remainder 1/64, that was needed to report exact series. During the Middle Kingdom that included the eleventh through fourteenth dynasties, exact series definitions and applications were often written by 6-terms, or less. The Egyptian fraction notation scaled to volume unit remainders to 1/320 hekat. For example, the Egyptian Mathematical Leather Roll, the RMP 2/n tableand the Akhmim Wooden Tablet wrote binary quotients and scaled remainders. The metaphorical side of this information linked Old Kingdom fractions 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64, to separate parts of the eye.' -wiki

Closely related to the Philonic doctrine of the heavenly Adam is the Adam Ḳadmon (called also Adam 'Ilaya, the "High Man," the "Heavenly Man") of the Zohar, whose conception of the original man can be deduced from the following passages: "The form of man is the image of everything that is above [in heaven] and below [upon earth]; therefore did the Holy Ancient [God] select it for His own form."As with Philo the Logos is the original image of man, or the original man, so in the Zohar the heavenly man is the embodiment of all divine manifestations: the Ten Sefirot, the original image of man. The heavenly Adam, stepping forth out of the highest original darkness, created the earthly Adam. In other words, the activity of the Original Essence manifested itself in the creation of man, who at the same time is the image of the Heavenly Man and of the universe, just as with Plato and Philo the idea of man, as microcosm, embraces the idea of the universe or macrocosm.

The Shining Soundtrack - The Awakening of Jacob

Nearby Luz en route to Haran, Jacob experienced a vision of a ladder or staircase reaching into heaven with angels going up and down it, commonly referred to as "Jacob's ladder". From the top of the ladder he heard the voice of God, who repeated many of the blessings upon him.

According to Rashi, this ladder signified the exiles that the Jewish people would suffer before the coming of the Jewish Messiah: the angels that represented the exiles of Babylonia, Persia, and Greece each climbed up a certain number of steps, paralleling the years of the exile, before they "fell down"; but the angel representing the last exile, that of Rome or Edom, kept climbing higher and higher into the clouds. Jacob feared that his children would never be free of Esau's domination, but God assured him that at the End of Days, Edom too would come falling down.

Jacob awakened, and continued on his way to Haran in the morning, naming the place "Bethel", "God's house". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob

The Awakening of Jacob was composed in 1974. It first plays at the film's beginning when Danny talks to Tony in the bathroom before 'blacking out.' Used, very appropriately, as Jack awakens from his bad dream while at his desk. Also plays during Danny's dream sequences and  when Jack enters room 237.

The key to these contradictions is that Lilith is Spirit under the ensorcellment of the Great Magician (Clare Quilty)--i.e., she falls under the sway of the Empire and becomes the motive force behind the illusion of Maya. AMOR first manifests itself in inversion as ROMA. This was seen in the previous post, where the Flim-Flam Man figuratively steals Lolita's power to create the world. If we assume that this really refers to the death of Eyes Wide Shut's Amanda Curran (Marilyn-Lolita) in 1962 ("Ex-Beauty Queen in Hotel Drugs Overdose"), the implication becomes clear. As in Jacob's Ladder, we wander the Land of the Dead, not even knowing that she has been killed and consoling ourselves with an external simulacrum (the "corporeal image of BABALON") that substitutes for the internal reality. The revelation of Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive would confirm this, as well as the fact that Adam the Director is creating a movie set circa 1961.

This theme continues in The End of the World, wherein the Father (Christopher Lee as a Catholic priest-cum-alien) holds Sue Lyon hostage until her husband (the Son) can find the necessary components to allow him to return to his home planet. This is the fundamental paradox. The Flim-Flam Man is Roman Polanski is Dom Cobb, the Director in eternal exile from his homeland for figuratively raping a young girl.

Here is the contradiction of the universe that is evident in Atonement: Our Sophia figure is writing the monomythical Play of the Hero's Journey inasmuch as she wishes to raise up a race of heroes (etymologically "servants of Hera") who will assist her. But to do so she must operate with and through the Hierophantic Lord of Illusions--"he always smoked Dromes."

"Help me, o warrior lord of Thebes, in my unveiling before the children of men!"

Also sprach Zarathustra:

People aren't very bright, you know. They say they want freedom, but when they get the chance, they pass up Nietzsche and choose Hitler, because he would march into a room and music and lights would come on at strategic moments. (David Bowie, 1976)

Regardless of the literal veracity of Joseph Atwill's claims regarding Caesar's Messiah, an important esoteric truth is conveyed. The Great Lie of the Outer Church of Rome (the Eternal Empire, present everywhere) is that it presents the Dead Man on the Cross as a god; the Inner Church operates under no such illusions and knows that Christ is the aspirant who must willingly offer himself up to a philosophic death on the Cross of the Four Elements. It was Christ's mission, it is rumored, to proclaim that the "Kingdom is within," yet instead they ignored his salvific Gnosis and worshipped the image as Truth. "Give us Barabbas!"
Magism was the Science of Abraham and Orpheus, of Confucius and Zoroaster. . . . Moses purified and re-veiled them, for that is the meaning of the word reveal. He covered them with a new veil, when he made of the Holy Kabalah the exclusive heritage of the people of Israel, and the inviolable Secret of its priests. The Mysteries of Thebes and Eleusis preserved among the nations some symbols of it, already altered, and the mysterious key whereof was lost among the instruments of an ever-growing superstition. Jerusalem, the murderess of her prophets, and so often prostituted to the false gods of the Syrians and Babylonians, had at length in its turn lost the Holy Word, when a Prophet announced to the Magi by the consecrated Star of Initiation, came to rend asunder the worn veil of the old Temple, in order to give the Church a new tissue of legends and symbols, that still and ever conceals from the Profane, and ever preserves to the Elect the same truths. (Albert Pike)

The Thin White Duke, being chosen from out of the faceless multitude by the vicissitudes of Fate ("I must be only one in a million") fully participates in the Mystery and accomplishes the union of Heaven and Earth ("throwing darts in lovers' eyes")--but in so doing so he is forced not to reveal but to re-veil; the audience are passive observers who, being entranced by the choreographed music and lights, do not perceive the Truth of the performance. Unless they break through the false wall that separates observer and observed, they will remain as secondary characters in someone else's Mystery Play ("Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead").
The artist doesn't exist. He's strictly a figment of the public's imagination. None of us exist. We're in the twilight zone. We'll all go to hell, 'cause we set ourselves up as gods. (David Bowie, 1972)
Joe the Lion nailed himself to a car and told us who we were. The Artist—the Pierrot—willingly undergoes his own crucifixion on the stage, like the Priest who ritually slays himself in the eucharistic rite to feed the multitude. By doing so, it is implicit that the Artist himself had taken over the Judeo-Christian role as Messiah--and this is the greatest blasphemy of them all. Bowie fully acknowledges the absurdity of this situation--but "it's too late to be hateful, the European canon is here."

(Art is MURDRUM)

"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

The Duke is Ziggy embalmed and enthroned, the exoteric image of the Dead Man on the Cross that is but the husk of doctrine. Thus the 'stations' are the Stations of the Cross, through which his crazed fans drive like demons. The profane mistake the signifier for the signified. "More idols than realities," said Bowie in 1980, quoting Twilight of the Idols by Nietzsche. Bowie becomes the Hierophant of the new Aeon, Zarathustra proclaiming the doctrine of the coming Starman to all who will listen.

"Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!"

The Hierophant: Are you watching closely?

The story begins with Karl's violent arrival in the Holy Land of AD 28, where his time machine, a womblike, fluid-filled sphere, cracks open and becomes useless. By interpolating numerous memories and flashbacks, Moorcock tells the parallel story of Karl's troubled past in 20th century London, and tries to explain why he's willing to risk everything to meet Jesus. We learn that Karl has chronic problems with women, homosexual tendencies, an interest in the ideas of Jung, and many neuroses, including a messiah complex.

Karl, badly injured during his journey, crawls halfway out of the time machine, then faints. John the Baptist and a group of Essenes find him there, and take him back to their community, where they care for him for some time. Since the Essenes witnessed his miraculous arrival in the time machine, John decides Karl must be a magus, and asks him to help lead a revolt against the occupying Romans. When he asks Karl to baptise him, however, the latter panics and flees into the desert, where he wanders alone, hallucinating from heat and thirst.

He then makes his way to Nazareth in search of Jesus. When he finds Mary and Joseph, Mary turns out to be little more than a whore, and Joseph, a bitter old man, sneers openly at her claim to have been impregnated by an angel. Worse, their child Jesus is a profoundly retarded hunchback who incessantly repeats the only word he knows: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Karl, however, is so deeply committed to the idea of a real, historical Jesus that, at this point, he himself begins to step into the role . . . Gradually, it becomes known that his name is Jesus of Nazareth.

In the end, determined to live the story of Jesus to its decidedly bitter end, he orders a puzzled Judas to betray him to the Romans, and dies on the cross. His last, agonized words, however, are not Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani, but the phonetically similar English it's a lie....it's a lie...let me down...

"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do . . ."

"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it. You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
